It’s that time of year again, mid-March, and while to some that conjures up visions of warmer weather and checking the calendar for holidays / spring break, to me it means one thing, find the hotel confirmation, badge and flight reservation I booked over 7 months ago, and head to Austin for SXSW.
For those unfamiliar with SXSW (Stands for South by Southwest, although if you’ve never attended you’ll find calling it by its full name shows you’re a newcomer, so just say “South By.”) it debuted back in 1987 as a music conference and festival. In ’94 film and interactive were added, and based on what a cab driver told me last year, interactive outsells both music and film now. Can’t say I’m surprised.
So I’m off, for five days of non-stop, information overload. Almost every time slot has two or three panels or discussions I want to see and the trick will be deciding. I’ll keep the @diamondpr Twitter voice active and might ask for some help on what to choose. The “can’t miss” sessions for me include presentations by Sean Parker and Ben Silbermann, and panels including Viral Is a Dirty Word: Strategic Video Success, 5 Reasons To Stop Investing In Facebook and (this one is for our VP Kara) What’s So [Bleeping] Hard About Social ROI.
I have committed to myself and my team to blog daily about what I’m absorbing, although if it’s anything like last year, that also includes copious amounts of alcohol…after hours. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that part…..SXSW is for extremists, they take “work hard and play harder” to a whole new level. I’m just grateful I can still keep up.
